Sensing
The vast network of human-made apparatus that collect and transmit data, used to diagram earth, is often hidden from view. Earth sensing machines occupy spaces that humans cannot. Low earth orbit satellites, deep sea meteorological buoys, cellular network antennas camouflaged in decoy foliage, silently gather and transmit the planet’s shifting topography and climate. This series of sculptures invites us to imagine what unseen earth-sensing machines look like.
Through the viewer’s imagination that the apparatus becomes activated. Data is collected in the mind of the observer. In observing, we operate as the earth’s own sensing apparatus, returning the gaze of our machines.
